A Guide to Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

By Fatmata S Callinder May 2, 2025

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is celebrated in May to recognize the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.

History of AAPI Heritage Month

The month-long celebration originated from Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week, which was established in 1977 to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese immigrants in 1843 and the contributions of Chinese workers to the transcontinental railroad. In 1992, the week-long celebration was expanded to a month-long observance.
